There is a petition for free songs to be eligible to win Grammys

Imagine uploading a track to Soundcloud one night with hopes of getting a few nods from your mates and perhaps some local producers, only to wind up at the Grammys? Well that could very well be the case.

There is a petition that aims to allow free songs to be eligible to win Grammys. The petition, as fair as it sounds, goes against the traditional rules of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who have always awarded “commercial releases” that are “available for sale from any date within the eligibility period” on music’s night-of-nights.

However, as the music world continues to evolve, perhaps so should the leading award shows?

In terms of electronic music, the sheer quantity of musicians releasing free music is extraordinary, and may very well change things up if these musicians were eligible to be nominated for a Grammy.

The petition is currently ongoing, and already has nearly 30,000 signatures.

You can sign or at least check it out here.
