Has Duke Dumont released the gay anthem of 2014?

If he has, its bloody brilliant.

Keeping in the key of heel-clickin’ happy tunes of recent releases, Duke Dumont has channelled some serious 90s vibes in new single ‘Won’t Look Back’.

Similarly to ‘I Got You’ and ‘Need U (100%)’, ‘Don’t Look Back’ cranks the usual deep bass prods and piano rifss, the single is a nod to the technical musical abilities of the current age. The big deviation between them however, is the strong vocal stylings which bear uncanny resemblance to London gay anthems of the mid-90s.

The unspecified vocalist has incredible skills – the abilities of which remind us of other favourite pop-diva voices such as that of Cher, RuPaul and Chaka Khan. Almost androgynous in stylings – the voice of the track is powerful and matches the emotional core of the track – a projection of love and a promise that one ‘Won’t Look Back’ (which could easily fit the mould of a coming-out scenario – whatever kind of ‘coming-out’ that might be).

Whether this was Dumont’s intention or not – we couldn’t be happier with the single, and following the reception of the release – it seems that the rest of the internet loves it too.

Seeing as this elating, anthem style is on the rise – could it be that the musical desires of the greater electronic audiences and gay club music lovers are merging?

With the hip-hop world experiencing a massive genre development of ‘queer hip-hop’ (spearheaded by talented acts such as Mykki Blanco and Zebra Katz), is it time that popular EDM also took a turn for the queerer?

If so, it’s an assimilation we’re happy to see.

Check out ‘Won’t Look Back’ below, plus a few vocal and synth comparisons we dug up so you can judge for yourself;
