Another day, another unique sonic invention. This time artist Bartholomäus Traubeck who has managed to build a record player that can read the lines from a slice of tree trunk and convert them into corresponding sounds.
Slightly confusing right?
The project, titled ‘Years’ utilises a Playstation Eye Camera and stepper motor attached to a record arm that can watch the lines, crunch the data and output a series of instruments that in this case previews a haunting piano number.
Although a needle doesn’t exist and no grooves are being… grooved the player stiff differs when a different cut of trunk is placed on there. Neat!
The idea of house or jungle sounds being programmed are slim but electronic artists out there could jump onto the technology for a weird art installation.
