Motez on the hunt for a ‘Creative Challenge’

Motez has completed a world tour, been heralded ‘Producer of the Year‘ by the Australian dance music scene and had a series of hits make way into most house DJ’s set not only in Australia but across the globe.

With an opportunity to finish your track with Motez through our competition with the Australian Institute of Music, we decided to catch up with the Adelaide based house head to see what’s in the works and most importantly, the best way to grab his attention!

Having completed a tour of the world and achieved lots of success with your music, what is your next goal as a musician?

You always want to keep growing as a person and an artist. I think more music for sure but more so the environment in which my music is presented moving more towards a live setup in the near future. I am a keyboard player by trade so gravitating towards that element of performance and integrating it into what I currently do is only a matter of time I feel.

What are Motez’s essential items for the studio?

A good cup of coffee, a keyboard and my Arsenal FC memorabilia.

When you enter a studio, do you have a structure to a session making music?

Not really, most of what I make is “loop based”. So I have a particular loop or hook running and I start adding elements to it to make the gist of the track. Once I have all of that together I start looking into building the arrangement of the track or what I call the “articulation” phase and see where the track takes me. I feel like there are particular sounds and methods that I gravitate towards and keep visiting but I guess that’s part of who I am as a producer.

What do you look for in working with someone on a track?

I look for something interesting and fresh, anything that constitutes a “creative challenge” not only to us as music makers but also to the audience to an extent. I think we’re in an age where a lot of people are not challenging themselves in making music, it’s all just “I want to hear it now” and in consequence the shelf life is much shorter and most of the time the quality is compromised

Which Australians would you like to see collaborate and why?

That’s very hard, but I love where Daniel Johns is going for example. I personally would love to work with musicians who are doing things that is somewhat removed from what i’m doing; people like Josh Pyke and Jordan Rakei (who recently finished a track with previous comp winner James Chatburn) who is this amazing, soulful singer from Brisbane. So much amazing talent here popping up and it’s hard to put them all in one paragraph because they’re all THAT good…

What new music are you working on?

Got a lot of things in the works and finished tracks, maybe enough for an album or two one day haha. Hopefully you guys can hear some new stuff soon…
