There have been moments where Kowton‘s redlining has slid too far into noise, and his sense of groove has been subsumed by aggression. But on his latest single for his own Pale Fire label, while both ‘H-Street’ and ‘Helsinki Sunrise’ are similarly hard, he’s broken down grime, house and techno down to the barest essentials to make for serious swagger. On the A-side he ruffs up the classic Eski template with his signature white-noise snares that pierce the ears, while the flip drops the tempo to a bashy grime-influenced house banger laced with machine gun snares and the nastiest, knotted subs.
