First Spin: Pat Carroll drops a scintillating ‘Branching’ EP

Australian producer and composer Pat Carroll is back with another terrific three track Branching EP. The Sydney based artist who is often compared to Jon Hopkins, Bonobo, Max Cooper and Floating Points, shows off his versatility with a great variety of tracks in this mini body of work.

On the EP, Pat delves deeper into his experimentation with electronic soundscapes; something that gave him drive during the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown. In his own words, “I really just wanted to start writing and see where I ended up.”

“All the different styles of music I was listening to at the time of writing the tracks influenced the writing process in a fairly positive way. It feels special to be sharing these tracks because they were what I was working on during this really bizarre time.”

Return Me is a slow building collaboration with Sydney singer-songwriter Ivy-Jane Browne, Return Me launches with swirling electronic instrumentation that is interwoven with Ivy-Jane Browne’s angelic vocals.

Branching is the title track of the project and an instrumental masterwork from Pat. His eye for intricacy is on show, with uplifting synths forging the foundation for a high-energy drum pattern that evolves.

Tectonics is almost onomatopoeic in title and sound. It rounds out the EP with Pat’s signature, club-driven intensity. quirky instrumentals paired with breakbeat drums and a soothing synth line.
