The Next Big Thing: We Chat To ‘Rore’ And Premiere His New Track ‘Talk About Cash’.

If you’re a Brisbane local or have a keen ear for Australian talent, then I hope you’ve heard of Rore, because I have an inkling that he’s about to blow up, and my feelings are generally pretty spot on.

Hailing from Brisbane, 22 year old Thomas Morrey AKA Rore is making waves in his local scene, playing sets at Oh Hello and soon to play at Family. In between studying at uni, Rore makes dub, bass and deep house fusions, which is precisely what ‘Talk About Cash’ is.

If I could describe ‘Talk About Cash’ in one word it would be ‘hype’. It’s so incredibly high energy, with a relentless thumping bass line and catchy vocals. Take a listen and download HERE:

We stopped in with Rore to ask him a few questions ahead of the release:

STONEY ROADS: Hello there Rore! Why don’t you introduce yourself?

RORE: Hey SR! My name is Tom, I’m 22, currently living in Brisbane and I write a combination of house and bass music.

SR: What/who are your main influences and inspirations?

R: This could be a very long list… If I narrowed it down to three Habstrakt would be first followed closely by Porter Robinson and Feed Me.

SR: What’s your musical background? How did you start producing?

R: I started playing saxophone when I was 11 so my roots are jazz and blues and I loved it. From there it took off, I spent the next few years trying out as many different instruments as physically possible.
When it came to production, I didn’t even discover dance music until I finished high school. I began studying Music Technology at the Queensland Conservatorium here in Brisbane however I initially intended to do more sessions work. That changed pretty quickly when a few friends I was studying with (who were into dubstep), introduced me to the other side of the coin.

SR: What was the defining moment in your life where you said, ‘yeah, I wanna make music’.

R: That’s easy, the first time I heard ‘Language’ by Porter Robinson. For me that song embodies beauty and power and yet it’s an inherently simple record. I’ve seen people crying their eyes out at his shows and it kind of struck home how powerful electronic music can be whether it’s experimental, tropical house *shudder* or drum & bass.

SR: What’s your favourite studio toy?

R: I’m sure I’ll get crucified for this but my recent favourite has been Sonic Academy’s KICK synthesiser. It allows you complete control over every aspect of the kick drum including everything from tuning individual sections to selecting the perfect click. As far as sound design goes I’ve used Massive for years and swear by it, although after recent reviews i think I have to look into Serum sometime soon…

SR: What track are you most proud of and why?

R: Probably the music that I’m waiting to release! I’m super proud of a few tracks I’ve got banked up as it’s a bit of a turning point for me. I’ve always struggled to finish records so the fact that’s happening naturally now and to a standard I didn’t think I’d be at a year ago is exciting for me.

SR: If you could work with anyone, who would it be and why?

R: That’s a tough question… Habstrakt would top this list as well but a close second would have to be Ghastly, that dude is putting out some really cool stuff at the moment and he seems like he’d be super chill.

SR: What do you do when you’re not making music, what are your hobbies?

R: I started studying again this year, Bachelor of Business this time round so between that, working and music I keep busy.

SR: Where can we catch you play? What could we expect from a Rore set?

R: I can’t say anything yet but I’ve got some shows I’m really excited about lined up for late 2016 and early 2017.
Usually I cover a bit of g-house, bass house, breaks, some stuff around 110 and a bit of dubstep depending on the crowd.

SR: Give me three tracks you’ve been playing in your sets lately.

R: Here’s four…

Dreams (Original Mix) – Bijou

Crowd (Original Mix) – Valy Mo

FEED EM (Original Mix) – Vengeance

Clowns (Original Mix) – Habstrakt

SR: What do you think of your local music scene?

R: The live music and club scene here in Brisbane is very strong, I feel like every time my bank account recovers another amazing show is announced. Fairly nervous as to how the lockout laws will affect the scene come February however I’m hoping for the best!
