Interview: LO’99 Lands in the States

Embarking on his debut US tour tonight in Hollywood, LO’99 is no stranger to the global dance circuit. With dance floor support from all of the heavy hitters in the game, LO has gathered quite a quiver including recent original thumper on AC Slater’s Night Bass. Ahead of his six-date stint in the states we checked in with LO’99 to hear about what he’s looking forward to about good ol ‘Merica.

LO’s unique evolution of classic bassline foundations fits right in on the dark dance floors of today. Active in the come-up of the West Coast label, LO’s transmissions from down under have had plenty of sweat at local events. His forward-thinking take on dance results in a futuristic electro built around as classic bass framework (I.E. perfect for da club).

LO’99 kicks off his tour tonight at the Avalon Hollywood. Ahead of the show he’s even doing a quick DJ lesson for a lucky rager.

Touching down in LA huh? What crews/artists are really moving dance floors in the US these days?

Yep, just got here!!! There’s heaps of dope stuff coming out of the US that I play out. Dirtybird, Night Bass, Fools Gold, OWSLA, Mad Decent & Main Course records fill up a lot of the space in my record box atm.

6 dates in the states for this first time, what are you most excited about in both US clubs and culture?

Pretty keen for it all. I can’t wait to drop some of my new tunes on the US crowds, from what I heard I’m pretty lucky that all the shows are gonna be proper sick, first gig is tonight – I’m on my way to Santa Barbara right now as I’m doing this, back to LA for Avalon tomorrow, then doing Audio in San Fran before I head east! There’s couple new dates being added onto end of my trip too, will be announcing next week!!

I’m super keen to check out bars and restaurants everywhere I am, meet new people and also hang out with my friends that are over this way. Already had some amazing Mexican in LA, might even try and make a quick trip to Mexico if possible after my San Diego show.

With dance music being flooded with producers as of late, what elements really separate the men from the boys?

Apart from a well produced, solid sound the most important thing for me is for a tunes to be original or different sounding – that’s what gets me excited about a new tune and get’s me adding it to my playlists. I think it’s ok to be influenced by other songs but you got to make it a song yours and make it have its own vibe.. I think pushing boundaries is the key thing if you want to be real man 🙂

You’ve added a slew of remixes and choice collabs this year, what do you have slated for the rest of 2016?

Quite a lot of stuff coming up actually… I’m just about to drop a new club jam on MRR called Make Me Feel, then through the rest of the year I have a few solo singles as well as collabs in the works with The Aston Shuffle, Taiki Nulight, Bixel Boys, Dr. Fresch, Ray Foxx and Maximono. I’ll be working in the studio with few peeps on this trip too.

Saw on the Facebook that you’re gonna make a valiant effort to Snapchat this tour, trying to get those US nudes huh?

Haha I don’t know what your talking about. PS – anyone reading can add me @getlo99 🙂

What’s your take on the importance of social media in today’s music industry?

Nowadays it’s the most important marketing tool that there is… and an amazing way to communicate and build vibes with people. For me, music and performance is the most important thing but if you don’t couple your tunes with proper social media action then you’re letting yourself down. Important to have fun with it too and not treat everything so seriously.

As a budding producer with a fresh sound how do you intend to shake up dance music release and clubs as your career progresses?

I’m not afraid to take risks with my productions or when I play out, I started doing this to make the music I dug and I’m going to keep on doing that without pandering to trends or what someone else thinks I should be doing.. my sound will progress as time moves but I will always keep things in vibe and push envelopes wherever possible. Promise 🙂
