So What’s The Deal With Electronic Music?

Is it me or is the current Electronic scene strikingly similar to Star Wars? Stick with me here, but I can’t help but feel that there are a small contingent of rebels (Musicians) fighting against the ever oppressive Empire led by Emperor Guetta and his trusty right-hand man Darth Afrojack. It sounds stupid but that’s the only way to put it. Honestly, what the fuck is happening?

One year ago it was okay, obviously there was the odd commercial song but we all just smiled politely and nodded knowing that we had a vast array of artists ready to cure us of this bullshit – now I can’t say the same.

Over the past few months, the scene has more or less gone to shit. We’ve discovered that our beloved ‘drops’ all sound the same and how easy it is to create a commercially viable song. Not just that, the names who began the surge of Electronic Music have forfeited their integrity for ">Lamborghinis, babes and more money than they know what to do with. Lastly we now have DJs who are so lazy or eager for a successful song that they are paying other producers to ghost-write it for them – unless you’re DJ Snake – then just grab whatever is trending on Soundcloud.

Electronic is such a beautiful thing however it seems that those at the head of it are more concerned about making a quick buck than anything else that they’ve decided to whore it out to the highest bidder. It’s no secret that record companies now push for electronic-based tunes so that not only are they a success in the charts but in the clubs as well.

Now take the festivals that accompany our beloved music scene. The likes of Ultra and God forbid Sterosonic struggle to have a single stroke of originality to put together a diverse and different line-up each year. Not only that, but the sets which are played on the main stages at these festivals are so generic that I feel a similar effect at a local house party where the formula of: electronic, dubstep, trap, RnB, commercial and the occasional classic rock vocals makes for a good performance. It truly annoys me that the most creative moment of 2013’s commercial-EDM scene was when Avicii used an acoustic guitar and live band on the mainstage at Ultra; a move which was shutdown by a large portion of the crowd. Are we so fixated on waiting for that drop, vocals and build-up that we don’t want it to change? Aren’t we bored of the same fucking thing happening? All we are doing is throwing a few more fireworks in, some brighter lights and bigger speakers and people think it’s a new performance.

Whatever happened to our desire for something innovative? It seems as if Major Lazer, Eric Prydz, Dillion Francis, Deadmau5, What So Not and several others are our last remaining hope. Who knows what will happen next, but lets hope it ends like the original Star Wars trilogy. Either that or it gets sold to Disney and then we’re all fucked.
