Kid Kenobi Announces 20 Years A Kid Tour & Mixtape

Kid Kenobi is a pioneer in Australian electronic music in the early 00’s, and is still  considered one of the biggest names to date due to his continually evolving style and myriad of awards – including Inthemix’s DJ awards from 2003-06, for three years in a row, making him the award’s longest running winner.

This year marks the 20th year of Kid Kenobi. To celebrate, he’s doing what he does best – throwing some parties. He’ll be taking his set across Australia in September and October before bringing on New Year’s in Victoria’s Mount Duneed Estate.

To give us a slice of what he’ll be playing and to pay homage to his 20 years of action, Kid Kenobi is delving back into his prestigious record collection and releasing weekly mixtapes of songs that defined and sculpted his career from its beginnings in ’96. The first installment of 20 Years a Kid covers the start of his career in ’96-98 when he first started DJing in Sydney.

This first mix captures some of the tracks I was playing back then: hip hop, big beat, and early breaks. ‘Breaks’ wasn’t actually a genre yet in 1996 and you had to dig pretty hard (at your local record store) to find a good breakbeat sounding record. But that’s what made it so exciting, the ‘discovery’. I’m sure there’s a tonne of tunes I’ve forgotten on here (and there were some I left off as they didn’t quite work in the mix) but the essence of what I did back then is here, including the last track ‘Papua New Guinea’ which I’d drop last EVERY time I DJ’d.

Anyway, I hope you dig the mix! Big love and welcome to my 20 year flashback!
