Oski talks Inspiration, Missy Elliott and being ‘The Best’

Sydney local Oski is killing the bass music game right now, with collaborations with UZ, Creaky Jackals, Apashe and Hydraulix, and a string of high energy shows across Australia. On February 29th, trap legend Oski brings us his highly anticipated EP ‘The Best’ via Disciple.

You can read about the EP announcement here.

We checked in on Oski to ask a couple questions about the EP.

Stoney Roads: ‘The Best’ EP comes out on Feb 29, can you give us some insight into what kind of sound we can expect from it?

Oski: I feel like ‘The Best’ hearkens back to a time when a lot of the popular trap music was less noise and more attitude filled melodies. I’ve really poured my heart and soul into ensuring that every little groove is as flowing as possible.

SR: What are some notable influences and inspirations that helped form this EP?

O: Lately I’ve found myself listening back to a lot of older Grandtheft and What So Not. I also get inspired by my friends, people like Ian Munro and Quix who are both killing the game right now. What I love about all these guys is there’s a lot more purposeful swag in each track. Instead of crushing sound design and piercing screeches (which definitely has its place) I’ve found myself more and more inspired by the intricacies of percussion and groove composition.

SR: This is your first release with Disciple, and Disciples first trap EP, what’s it like working with the Disciple team?

O: The Disciple team have been great, everything has run very smoothly and they’re an absolute pleasure to work with.

SR: You’ve collaborated with Command Q on the track ‘Horns’, what was it like working together, and what’s the reception been like to ‘Horns’ thus far?

O: Command Q have been there since the beginning. I met Shaun and Louis early on in my first cycle of interstate shows and we’ve been good mates since. Quite often when I visit Perth, I try my absolute best to see those guys. They’re both very talented musicians and I enjoy working with them because they’re about as weird as I am, so naturally it all just flows when we’re in the same room.

Horns has gotten some pretty overwhelming support from fans and artists alike. I think it’s kind of a sound people slept on, for fear of sounding too much like Hudmo or whatever. But we made some dope horns that we were all vibing on hard so the track ended up writing itself.

SR: Tell me why this EP is titled ‘The Best’.

O: Because we the best.

SR: You’ve recently announced signing to APA Agency, is there an American tour on the cards?

O: There are definitely plans involving America at the moment. I can’t reveal too much at the moment, but I can say I’ve got a solid team of hardworking people who are working on some stuff.

SR: What are your top 3 tracks at the moment?

O: heRobust – Pipette Up
Rickyxsan x Dirty Audio – Gettin’ That
GTA – Saria’s Turn Up

SR: If you could work with anyone, who would you pick?

O: Missy Elliott, nuff sed

SR: What’s been your most memorable show to date

Man, there are so many memorable shows, that it’s hard to pick. But I guess if I were to pick one, it’d be a milestone so I’m choosing the Father Villa Takeover that Hydraulix and I played in Perth. It was without a doubt the loosest show I’ve ever played.

SR: What’s next for you, Oski?

O: World domination.
