A chat with Melbourne’s G-House ambassador Hey Sam

Hey Sam is quickly becoming a recognisable name in the Australian house music realm.

We spoke with the G-House entrepreneur and Jump To This label head about his massive 2015, establishing his name across the Australian clubbing scene anf what the new year has in stall for himself and the label.

Stoney Roads: How did you spend you new years? were you busy with shows?

Hey Sam: New Years was awesome, I played at Falls Festival Mt Dundee on the 30th, in Geelong on NYE and in Portsea on NYD. All three gigs weren’t too far from Melbourne so it was also good to spend most of it with my close mates.

SR: When did you start producing g-house? Were you always certain of the genre you preferred or did you fall into this style through progressively?

HS: I started producing about 7 years ago and was originally making a more funky jackin’ style of house music. About 3 years ago I started slowing down the tempo a little bit and using slightly more aggressive sounds which naturally lead to G-House. It’s been great to stick to a certain sound as I’ve found it brings a lot more confidence when writing.

SR: Who are some of your musical influences? Both in the dance music realm and outside of it?

HS: In the dance music realm internationally my favourite artists for the last few years have been Amine Edge & Dance and Shiba San, more recently really liking Malaa on the slightly harder tip. Locally my very good mate and label partner Torren Foot, it’s always good fun when we get in the studio together. Outside of dance music I grew up listening to popular rappers like Dr Dre and Eminem and I think that has had big impact on the music I like making today.

SR: You’ve got a tonne of remixes under your belt, how do you go about remixing a song? What are your methods when you get into it?

HS: The main goal for me when remixing is making the song playable in my DJ sets. Sometimes it can be as simple as restructuring and adding new drums whereas other times I write a complete new track and only use the vocal. I’ve found the remixes that have been the easiest and quickest to put together usually turn out to be my favourite.

SR: Are their any tracks you’d love to get your hands on to remix at the moment? Or anything you’re currently working on remixing you can fill us in on?

HS: At the moment my main focus is finishing off more original tracks but I just started playing around with a bootleg of Pusha T ‘Untouchable’ it’s proving to be a little tricky though so I’m not sure if it will ever see the light of day.

SR: You’re going to playing in Brisbane this weekend, how do find the crowds in other states go in comparison to your local Melbourne crowds?

HS: This is only my second time to Brisbane and pumped to be back as last time The Met was heaps of fun to play. A few years ago interstate crowds were always way more receptive than Melbourne but now I would say it’s on par with the rest of the country as people’s tastes have changed over time.

SR: What was the craziest show you’ve played till this day? What went down?

HS: By far, Falls Festival the other week. I played on the Grand Theatre stage which at the start of my set clashed with Disclosure on the Valley Stage. It turned out to be a blessing though as it calmed my nerves by starting with just a small crowd. For the second half of the set my stage was the only stage open so the crowd poured in after Disclosure finished. It was a crazy experience I’ll never forget starting a set to basically zero people and finishing to over 10,000 people chanting for one more song.

SR: You run a label ‘Jump To This’, how do you find it? What does 2016 have in stall for yourself and the label?

HS: I love running the label. Last year we slowed down a little on the release front to tighten things up and do a rebrand. Then a couple months ago we celebrated the labels 5th birthday with a party at Revolver and we couldn’t be happier with the turn out on the night. 2016 is looking to be a great year with the next three releases on the label all prepared to drop very soon.

You can catch Hey Sam this weekend at The Met in Brisbane, with headlines duties for Mashd N Kutcher.
