Cairns Council Are Not Happy At The Idea Of Lockouts For Queensland

Overnight Cairns city council unanimously rejected planned lockouts for Queensland urging premiere Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Queensland Government to rethink the proposed laws that have could be seen as the crippling factor of New South Wales’ own nightlife industry.

Taking on the hashtags #OurNightOut and #OurChoice they look to fight the idea of lockouts that will “hurt small business, tourism and jobs” proving once again that the laws are not a real solution to alcohol fuelled violence.

BREAKING: Cairns Council have today unanimously passed a motion to reject lockout laws planned to hit Queensland nightlife in the coming months. We urge the Premiere Annastacia Palaszczuk MP and the Queensland Government to take note of today’s announcement and rethink their proposed laws that will hurt small business, tourism and jobs. #OurNightOut #OurChoice

Although not having any legal standing since its a state issue, it is a pro-active move by the local council to show their stance towards the lockout laws that could mean refusal of entry to venues at 1:00am and closure at 3:00am.

Meanwhile in New South Wales countless venues have shut, jobs lost and an industry dying at the hands of the punish all laws that are in place with a recent report showing violence has actually spread to surrounding suburbs and increased in Pyrmont where the casino resides without such lockouts.

In July the Victorian Government relaxed lockout laws once again allowing small bars to serve alcohol past 1am in an attempt to invigorate Melbournes nightlife.

We hope the Queensland Government take note…
