Inner West Warehouse Zoning Under Serious Threat

As the lockout laws suffocate Sydney’s inner city creative and clubbing scene and people seek new areas and creative spaces out, more threat has comes to hand with a potential re-zoning of industrial areas along Victoria Road in Marrickville.

A rich developer is trying to get his grubby hands on 18.03 hectares of industrial land in Marrickvile and turn it into residential or mixed residential/industrial space. To put the sheer size of this project into perspective, the corrupt Barry O’Farrell’s Barangaroo Casino plan is 22 Hectares, 4 hectares more than this concept. With 50 metre high buildings amidst a very close by flight path, the Marrickville industrial precinct area has been specifically protected as employment lands (up until money gets involved, huh!).

Greens Councillor Max Phillips quoted; “Manufacturing and creative industries and associated jobs will be forced out of the area under this plan. Creative and bespoke industries are undergoing a revival in Marrickville’s industrial areas. It would be a shame to see these new industries replaced by generic convenience stores and empty shops below apartment buildings.”

Marrickville’s creative and industrial space is under serious threat. Check the full councillor briefing here. Word is, there will likely be time for community input, so keep in the know when the next council meetings are on. Remember, once these things are done, they’re done. The worst thing you can do is be silent.
