What Can Australia Learn From DJ Mags ‘Top 100’ Clubs?

No Aussie clubs made the 2014 ‘DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs List’. We’re not surprised.

Why don’t we get a mention? The majority of the top placeholders are super clubs. Enter a super club, its as if you’re entering another planet. A jungle of glitter, lasers and superior sound systems. With capacities upwards of 2,000 people, Australian night clubs can’t compete. You could say we are just more ‘intimate’.

The controversy surrounding the annual EDM popularity contest aka ‘DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ’s’ list has diverted towards the clubs. With larger wads of cash spent on production, marketing and promotions; does it help to secure these super clubs a higher place on the list? Probably *cough* Pacha *cough*.

As well as pulling massive crowds every night, these clubs get support from some of the biggest artists on the EDM scene, this publicity allows for more votes. To strike gold is to get a DJ residency. A residency from an international is a rarity in Australia, simply due to our distance from the rest of the world. When artists make the trek down under it’s usually to follow the festival circuit.

As expected, major party destinations such as Ibiza and Las Vegas show up frequently on the list with clubs like Space Ibiza (#1), Pacha Ibiza (#3) and Ushuaia (#11). Maybe because all you do there is no work, all play! Down further on the list are clubs with roots from the underground scene; these generally have a history which lead to an enhanced following over the years such as Ministry of Sound (#12) and Berghain (#14).

What can we learn from ‘DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs?’

1. Increase capacity, bigger is better (Green Valley #2, has 6,000 capacity).
2. Get an EDM superstar for a DJ residency (Hakkasan #10, had Calvin Harris, Tiësto, Hardwell & more).
3. Re-brand Australia as the world’s biggest party island (a la Ibiza, Mallorca, Las Vegas).
4. Exclusivity is key (Berghain #14 is über selective).
5. Follow the path to the underground and emerge from there (Ministry of Sound #12).
6. More lasers. It can’t hurt!
