Legendary rock guitarist to collab with Bassnectar on new project

Revered and talented electronic artist Bassnectar has confirmed that he’s working on a new electronic project with Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Bassnectar, aka Lorin Ashton, revealed details about their upcoming collaboration: “[Morello]’s working on this really cool project where he’s working with multiple electronic music producers to create electronic songs that he can recreate live on this super, perverted, unexplainable, bastardized guitar mutant instrument thing.”

Bassnectar has made no secret of the fact that he’s a huge RATM fan – he’s known for dropping some seriously insane remixes ‘Killing in the Name of’ and ‘Wake Up’ into his live sets over the years. “It was so special getting a phone call from him in his crazy deep voice and having him start off saying, ‘Oh, I’m such a fan,'” Ashton said. “You could tell he wasn’t faking it because he starts referencing different songs and different bass lines of different songs. You quickly realise, ‘Woah! He is not only a fan, he is really fucking educated [on electronic music].'”

Morello initiated the project himself, is also said to be working with Skrillex and Knife Party (who recently shared a snippet of their collab with Morello during a live set), among others. Interestingly, all of these artists found their musical feet in the world of rock and metal, before transitioning into electronic genres – so it’s no wonder that they have a shared affection for heavier music that blends rock with electronic!

Both Bassnectar Morello shared some clues about their collaboration earlier this year, including posting photoson Instagram:

@Bassnectar: “in the studio with @tommorello, raging against machines!!!!”

“I proposed to him that we basically pretend that we are a band and that we write a song together,” Bassnectar explains.

“I pretty flagrantly just said, ‘I want to make a Rage Against the Machine song if that’s cool, and I don’t want someone to hear it and think, “Oh, it’s a DJ remix of Rage Against the Machine.”‘ I just want it to sound like some fucking funnel into a hurricane, and we have it, that’s the cool news. We have this fucking killer song.”

He also went on to praise Morello, one of the most influential heavy rock guitarists of all time, for being so open to experiment with the world of electronic music. He criticised Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl for not being open in the same manner: “It’s pretty disappointing watching certain classic heroes of rock music miss the boat. Like Dave Grohl, who on a personal level [is] a great guy and on a musical level, he’s a legend. But he’s gone out of his way to really publicly dismiss new generations of creativity.”

The project doesn’t have a name or release date as yet, but fingers crossed we’ll get to hear it soon.
