Skerrit Bwoy: Now A Hype Man For God

After years of dagger-leaping from ladders for Major Lazer Dale Richardson AKA Skerrit Bwoy, the dancehall legend and hype man Diplo discovered in the Bronx and enlisted into his live troupe has taken up a new path for his talents, as a priest. Mystereo, another hype-man on his own quest to find existential answers about his profession sought out Richardson for advice in “an interview/mini documentary that chronicles the life of two hype men in the Electronic Dance Music scene. One has found God and the other wears a mask to protect you from the evils of the world.”

The Rorschach mask bearing DJ and former hypeman for Sazon Booya found Skerrit Bwoy at the Full Gospel Tabernacle International in New York for a surprisingly raw conversation of the spiritual crisis’ that come with putting yourself in front of a crowd with that hype-man’s intensity and the impacts that experience has on both the crowd and the performer. We highly recommend you watch the ten minute interview below but here’s a few standout moments:

Skerrit Bwoy – Do you really care about those people that you’re trying to entertain. Or you just trying to make that money? Is it about making people happy and bringing this wonderful joy to them or is it about your fame and going like …

heartheart

Is that that what it’s about, what does [the heart sign] mean? Is this real or are you just putting it up so other people gon’ put it up? It’s just a regular call and response. These people don’t love you, they don’t care about you. I don’t know about no other DJ, I don’t know about no other MC I don’t know their heart but me? I genuinely care for the people that I entertain. And that’s why I left music.

The artist has not completely left music, seeking to put together gospel music “from Christians, for the world to be healed, with the message of God” as a DJ/producer. On his former touring mate Diplo, Richardson said, “I got love, and I do pray for Diplo. The other day his mom ring me up and was talking to me and I’m like yo, I understand and I never stop praying for him because I know if he comes over and we could do what we did out there for God, in Jesus name? We could change the world!”
