oOoOO – Without Your Love [Nihjgt Feelings]

Without Your Love, the debut record from San Francisco producer Chris Dexter, is an album that requires all your time and emotion. There are no quick fixes; you need to give yourself over to oOoOO’s distinct world. An RA review of his first EP in 2010 described his sound as a “lush, dark world constructed from fleeting sounds and spine-tingling melodies and vocals,” and side from a few odds and ends, so far he’s only released two EPs on Tri Angle Records. His sound is otherworldly and distinctly atmospheric; almost unmusical in fact. Though, this doesn’t mean it’s not compelling and affecting – he’s a master at playing with texture and tone, speed and space. This album, released in a couple of days on June 24, is a perfect showcase of his witch-house perfection over  all 11 tracks. It finds the producer successfully forging a refined suite that, while certainly unsettling at times, never loses its focused application of melody or fastidious approach to texture in the pursuit of cheap thrills.
oOoOO’s sound is incredible unique, left-of-centre and highly unusual; there’s no doubt that Without Your Love is a difficult listen. I was left feeling drained and kind of exhausted after listening. What is clear, though, is that if you give yourself over to it it’s very rewarding. Have a listen to a couple of the tracks off the LP below, and pre-order it on iTunes here. Big ups.
