Nightime Drama: Adelaide techno crew set to launch in Sydney

Australia’s techno scene is really starting to blossom, with numerous collective starting to gain some serious traction, not only locally, but on a global stage. One such group is Nightime Drama, an Adelaide based group which first emerged on the South Australian scene in 2012.

Nightime Drama was formed by Adelaide duo Peter Fincher and Shaun Franklin who had a simple vision to release quality mixes from artists both locally and internationally.  Their vehicle for doing so was through their recording imprint which has seen releases from artists such as Christian Vance, Yoshihiro Arikawa and the anonymous Infinite Loops. They also push quality sounds through their events which has hosted artists such as Steffi and XDB.

Recently, the Nightime Drama crew has expanded from 2 to 3, with the addition of Australian techno matriarch Trinity, who we interviewed last year. You can read that article here. The concise version is that Trinity is a Sydney based artist who has represented her brand of techno all around the world and especially in Germany, including venues such as Harry Klein, Berlin’s Studio R and Tresor. She is no small deal.

With Trinity’s inclusion to the team, Nightime Drama is now expanding their operation to Sydney. They’ll be having their Sydney launch party on Feb 3rd at basement venue Tokyo Sing Song, which from this writers experience, is a fantastic intimate venue. Click here to head through to the event page. The evening will include an all local lineup of Baron Castle, Magda Bytnerowicz and residents Dave Stuart, Matt Lush and of course, Trinity herself.

But wait, there’s more. In addition to all the recent activity from Nightime Drama, they’ve recently started their own podcast series. As an ongoing tradition for the label, each podcast will include and interview in which each artist is asked the same series of questions. Most importantly, each podcast will carry on the mantra that Nightime Drama was founded upon, “A forward thinking label that is passionate about promoting music as an art-form, bringing sounds from the past with the present to make the future”. Their first guest on the series is Eli Verveine, a Swidish artist who hails from Zurich.  You can check out Eli’s mix plus accompanying interview below.

1) Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Most definitely a night owl!

2) What is your home city and what makes it special?

Zurich is such a lovely city, which has a lot to offer for its size. Located at a beautiful lake surrounded by snowy mountains.

3) The term DJ’s DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ’s DJ?

Daniel Bell

4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?

Well, most definitely a vivid and colourful underground scene created by passionate people. Even though, unfortunately, people on my side of the planet are not aware it.

Ahead of my first visit in OZ, I didn’t know what to expect. What a great surprise it was, to meet so many like-minded people which are so passionate about what they are doing. Not to forget that you have, in my opinion, one of the best record stores in the world in Adelaide – “Transition Records”. Despite its relatively small size, the selection is exceptionally and it is impossible to leave the store without a gem.I truly hope that Australia’s electronic underground scene will get its well deserved recognition.

5) What has been the stand out track that you’ve playing this month?

Autechre – Incunabula

It`s not a track but a whole album I have to mention. I’ve been waiting many years to have this gem on vinyl and now now it finally got re-pressed.

Nightime Drama has a good thing going for themselves, and with the addition of Sydney operative Trinity, it’s an operation that only set to expand and spread it’s message across Australia and the world.
