LISTEN: Black Sun Empire & State Of Mind ft. Virus Syndicate – Caterpiller + exclusive interview

Black Sun Empire are back after a few months hiatus with an absolutely massive collaboration with State Of Mind.

‘Caterpillar’ is a bass heavy, high-energy fuelled, drum and bass tune, with catchy, hard hitting lyrics. Virus Syndicate definitely adds an extra dimension of toughness to the track. Give it a listen:

We caught up with BSE to ask them a few questions:

STONEY ROADS: What’s up Black Sun Empire! You’ve had an eight month hiatus, we’ve missed you. Besides this ridiculous collab with State of Mind and Virus Syndicate, what else have you been working on?

BLACK SUN EMPIRE: Besides endless sharpening snare drums and fattening kickdrums, we joined a teambuilding cooking course. And I’m proud to say that Rene just won the best ‘Beef Cannelloni’ competition in town. Tony soprano would be so proud.

SR: What was the creative process behind ‘Caterpiller’? How was it working with State of Mind and Virus Syndicate on this track?

BSE: State of Mind are basically living in our studio when they travel Europe. Normally we go and drink in our local bar across the street until we come up with a great idea. Then we go home, sleep and sober up. By the time we enter the studio the next day it’s always a bit of a gamble if we remember our ‘brilliant’ plan or not … if not we restart the process. Virus syndicate were basically the only ones left that were willing to work with us. I guess they must like drinking.

SR: You keep busy running your label ‘Blackout’, what have been some of your favorite releases this year?

BSE: We’re proud that we’ve released both Neonlight and Rido’s ‘Awesome’ Debut albums and the 3 years of Blackout remix compilation was a great reflection on how many people love what we’re doing. Hopefully we can keep that up 😀

SR: What have you been listening to lately? Which artists do you think we should be keeping an ear out for?

BSE: Really like what ‘No Mana’ is doing on Mau5trap.

SR: What’s the most memorable show you’ve played?

BSE: Probably one of the first ones. It’s was on a big festival in Holland called ‘ Lowlands’. Playing for the 5th time ever. In front of 5000 people. On Vinyl, Very nervous, Hands shaking (although that might have been something else). After that it’s all a blur.

SR: Music wise, what’s been your proudest moment?

BSE: Being able to install Cubase

SR: What’s on your Christmas wish list this year?

BSE: An ounce of Freedom and some chocolate fudge
