Talking Berlin’s Gay Culture, Cocktail D’Amore, and Running An Italian Party with Discodromo

Giacomo Garavelloni and Giovanni Turco have continuously solidified their standings within the deep-house and gay scene across the globe, both with their DJ duo and innovative and exciting parties.

Since crossing paths in Italian nightclubs, the two quickly found their common love of music, and ws only a matter of time before they created their DJ partnership Discodromo. By 2008, the two relocated to Berlin where their incredibly diverse sets have led to notable bookings in an immense amount of clubs, such as the infamous Panorama Bar in Berlin, Output in New York, Smart Bar in Chicago, ageHa in Tokyo, as well as Sónar Festival in Barcelona. From there they’ve produced their own tracks, resulting in their debut 12″ Cosmorama on Internasjonal. In 2009, the duo teamed up with Berghain resident DJ Boris to create Cocktail d’Amore, a monthly party that has become a staple in Berlin’s gay scene, as well as hosting editions at Lux in Lisbon and Rex Club in Paris. Stoney Roads were lucky enough to speak to them before their show at Higher Ground in Sydney, hosted by The House of Mince and Open Air Sydney.

SR: For those of us that aren’t familiar with Discodromo, tell us who you are. How did you two first meet?

DD: Hello everyone, Discodromo are two fags who met in a gay bar in northern Italy at the end of the 90’s.

SR: What was the change in scene like when you first moved from Italy to Berlin? Did that accommodate your creative vision, or did the switch make it a bit difficult to settle in at first?

DD: The reason why we moved to Berlin is exactly because there was no scene in Italy, so yeah, it was like breathing again. Anyway, before we moved to Berlin we used to visit for years so that made the transition very smooth.

SR: What are your thoughts on Australia’s, and more specifically Sydney’s, gay scene at the moment? What are you most looking forward to on your trip out here?

DD: For what we experienced last time we were in town it seems very diverse and inclusive. (Peter’s [House of Mince]) Party was very mixed and people had a great time, so yeah, can’t wait to do it again!!

SR: How did CockTail D’Amore first start? And how did you get Boris on board? What was your inspiration behind its creation?

DD: It all started in a dirty basement with a bunch of friends. Boris is a friend, a mentor and a great dj, we connected instantly. Like us, he also felt the need for something new and different in the Berlin gay party scene and that’s how it happened.

SR: Do you think it has benefited the two of you in having extensive experience in the club scene in Italy as well as Berlin in running your own party?

DD: Definitely. Running a party in Berlin is so much easier than in Italy though. You don’t have corrupt cops to bribe and all kinds of limitations, like closing times and serving alcohol. In almost 8 years we had the police coming twice. The second time they walked around for 3 minutes total, came out and said: *great party guys!* then left.

SR: What’s it like playing in other cities such as Lisbon, and at huge festivals like Sonar, and have a huge following of gay and straight crowds? Did you ever expect this?

DD: Not really. We never had any expectation, it just happened and we’re very grateful for that.

SR: You’re definitely known for some incredibly successful Panorama Bar sets – do you ever feel pressure to play the right records in an environment like Berghain, or does everything come naturally?

DD: Actually if there’s a place – beside our own party – where a DJ can truly be her/himself is Panorama Bar, where the crowd is one of the most open minded we’ve ever encountered.

SR: What’s next for Discodromo? More releases, more parties?

DD: Yes, it’s not over 😉 There’s a new collaborative record we made with Massimiliano Pagliara coming out soon on our label and more other stuff which you can find out about through our FB page. Stay tuned.

Catch Discodromo on their Australian tour this month, hitting Power Station and Cub 80 in Melbourne, Strawberry Fields, and Opera Bar in Sydney.
