Charging out of the gates on his first release ever is newbie Mona Vale. His debut single ‘Not Given Up’, premiered on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show as one of his Eclectic Selections is an emotional slow burner in the same vain as Maribou State or even Bon Iver.
It’s about a relationship of his coming to an abrupt end, a rash decision on behalf of his ex-girlfriend and his constant trust that things would go back to the way they were. It’s a feeling you can really sense throughout the track – bittersweet, but with a hope for things to come. It’s the sort of song you could see getting played in the club, but also listening to by yourself. The wavey synths, relaxed percussion and subtle bass all make for something which is insanely cruisey to listen to. Mona Vale’s also done all the vocals on this himself, v. impressive.
With such a strong start, fingers crossed we hear more from him very, very soon.
