Lockout Laws May Ease… But There Is A Catch

In some bittersweet news this morning acting NSW premier Troy Grant has hinted that if the current review into the Sydney lockout laws proposes pushing lockout laws to 3am on the proviso they close their doors at the same time.

Whilst this would mean you’d now be able to get from World Bar to Harpoon Harrys and even the Burdekin without sprinting around the city like a galah at 1:25am, you’d also be hanging up those dancing shoes at 3am.

“Every bit of evidence I’ve seen or heard about, even in my previous experience with liquor accord arrangements, it’s not the lockouts that have the greatest impact, it’s the last drinks,” Mr Grant said.

Keep Sydney Open posted this message following the latest development,

“With these words from our Acting Premier Troy Grant, we are hopeful that the lockouts will be relaxed in the near future. However, we also advocate for exceptions being made to cease of service times for safe, well-run venues.

Sydney has always been one of the safest cities in the world, so let’s be very clear: the current legislation was an overreaction to tragic incidents that were caused by two troubled, violent men.

Their names are Kieran Loveridge and Shaun McNeil. The way in which our state government responded to these two individuals has ruined our city.

We will work with the government to help rebuild Sydney’s vibrancy and confidence as a city that pulses day and night, but first we need to get rid of these lockouts.”

Whilst we’ll have to wait until after the final report is released to see what actually comes to fruition it’s certainly an interesting development in what has become a largely monotonous narrative.
