Matthias Meyer Gives Us His Top 5 Artists For a Watergate Compilation

The Watergate brand is one that demands respect on the global dance scene, and its Berlin-based club (of the same name) is a shoe-in for any electronic music lover’s ‘clubs to visit’-list while in Germany.

By now you should’ve heard about the club’s amazing light installations, if not, a quick Google search should set you straight. It’s not only in the nightlife sector where the brand excels, and its Watergate CD compilation series (released on Watergate records of course) is one of the scene’s most enduring, with acts like Solomun, Tiefschwartz, Ellen Allien and Pan-Pot all featuring as past compilers  Earlier this year they released the 20th edition of the series, helmed by none other than Watergate resident Matthias Meyer.

And what an inspired choice it turned out to be as the German delivered an 80-minute mix that is filled with suave, functional and coolly niche house music,  featuring classy acts like Traumprinz, Palms Trax, Marco Ressman and even Australian local Retza (alongside YokoO). On the eve of Matthias Meyer’s 3-date Australian tour we thought it would be interesting to reverse the roles, and let Matthias decide which acts he would choose to compile a Watergate compilation. And we can’t argue with his choices.

Rise Crew

The Rise Crew, who consists of Hyenah, Dede and Floyd Lavine, are in charge of a new party series called ‘Rise’, which will feature at Watergate. The night is loosely based around house music and artists originating from Africa like Culoe De Song and Black Coffee. I am a big fan of African-influenced music, so I would like to see the Rise Crew do a mix for Watergate.

Jimi Jules

Jimi and me are both part of newer additions to the Watergate family as we only joined the label about 2-3 years ago. Jimi has a wide range in his taste and production, and he even has some jazz projects going on. Not only that but he is also a super fantastic DJ and a nice guy. I am curious to see what he will do with a Watergate compilation.

Patlac

He is my best buddy for more than 15 years now and we also share a studio in Hamburg. We have played a few thousand B2B sessions together and have also collaborated on a few tracks and remixes. But he is a amazing DJ by his own right, and he really deserves an opportunity to make an official mix

Lee Burridge & Matthew Dekay

Lee Burridge and Matthew Dekay are one of my favourite DJs ever. Their BPM set from 2015 is probably the best set I have ever heard: 5 hrs of pure grooves and emotions. A mix from them featuring a few exclusive edits from Matthew would just be perfect.

DJ Koze

Koze is one of my favourite ‘artists’ ever – and he is also from Hamburg. All his mixes and productions are so different! His last DJ Kicks mix was filled with almost only hip hop cuts, all featuring that trademark DJ Koze weird and funny flavor. Soooooo excited to see what he would do. He would probably deliver a mix with filled with reverse ambient music, field recordings and telephone jokes (all with a Hamburg/German slang) 😉 A true artist!
