Foreign Beggars talk ‘The Bits/100 Standard’

After a year out from a decade of solid releasing and touring, English super group Foreign Beggars have made and exultant return with a two piece EP, showcasing the tracks ‘100 Standard’ and ‘The Bits’, featuring the genius of Machinedrum, Fracture, Ocean Wisdom, Asa and Sorrow.

‘100 Standard’ utilizes genre diversity, hybrid production and soulful lyricism to create an unforgettably fresh and incredibly catchy track.

‘The Bits’ is a raw, grimey track, with high energy and killer vibes, and next level high caliber production skills. It’s bold and modern, with a distinctive edge.

In association with the release, we chatted to Foreign Beggars about inspiration and new collabs. Check it out!

Stoney Roads: Hey there Foreign Beggars! Killed it with this two piece EP, how was it working with Machine Drum, Fracture, Ocean Wisdom, Asa and Sorrow? How’d the idea for these tracks come into fruition?

Foreign Beggars: Super sick. It’s always a pleasure to work with Travis. The track always starts as a bare bones skeleton and when it comes back is an entirely different beast. Was dope to correspond and work the track with Fracture too. Both some of our favourite and progressive producers out there.
Asa and Sorrow, pretty much a similar story. ‘The Bits’ actually started out as a track we were doing with Machinedrum but due to him having to go on an engagement cruise and his album due wasn’t able to work on it so we took it to Asa and Sorrow who brought it right back to a sickeningly UK sound.
Ocean is just an ultimate badman and very pro.

SR: How has the reception been for these tracks thus far?

FB: Reception has been real cool. Nice spins on radio and the fans across the board seem to be loving it. As our styles are really varied sometimes the hip hop heads and more electronic fans seem to have specific preferences but this seems to be an all out duppy. Can’t wait till the videos drop.

SR: Let’s talk ‘100 Standard’, could you give us an insight into the lyricism behind this one?

FB: Wanted to bring it back to skills and wordplay a bit. Sometimes when working on dance floor stuff you work with more structured stuff and not get too tech. Also, lyrically, Metrop wanted to come from a much more real and honest standpoint as opposed to the lofty sci fi/ abstract or general braggadocio we tend to fuck with. Ocean is in this to eat motherfuckers and it treating the rap game like a blood sport and I think that comes through in his verse.

SR: ‘The Bits’ is extremely raw and fresh. What inspired the energy in this track?

FB: London.

SR: How do you work together as a team to come up with such innovative and diverse sounds? How do you mesh together when performing live?

FB: As we’ve grown older we’ve learnt that we are in fact very different people. Our energies and styles/tastes and sounds differ but it’s a central respect for the art form and the end product that make us push and pull until we’ve got something fresh that is fully representative of both of us.

SR: Last year you seemed to focus a lot on touring, any memorable moments?

FB: Ah man.. So many I can’t remember.

SR: Can we expect lots of new music from you this year? More of your signature multi-genre style?

FB: Most definitely. Recording is the Modus Operandi right now so be sure to expect a bag of newness. All styles too.

SR: Your releases include plenty of high profile collaborations spanning across a variety of genres, will 2016 see you working with more big names?

FB: We are working on some stuff with Critical Music’s Hyroglifics & Problem Child and that is all I can let off right now, but most definitely watch this space.

SR: You have a string of European tour dates starting in May, any plans to bring your live show and custom visuals to other continents in the near future?

FB: Yeah we are looking at doing a full European tour after the summer and potentially the world over the course of the next year.
