SR: What are you 5 touring travel essentials?

J:

1. A solid travel outfit, Sweats, hoody and comfortable shoes… Cant be stuck on that plane in some uncomfortable gear.

2. External hard drive with all my samples on it. I can’t fit my whole sound library on the computer I perform with so I always need to have my drive on deck. I love creating music and getting inspired by new environments.

3. Sleeping Aid of some sort. With long flights and jet lag its hard to catch up on sleep. Not to mention I am 6’3″, so getting comfortable on long flights is not easy for me. I need to be sedated to make the trip doable. A nice weed cookie before a flight does me just right. haha

4. Bathing suit. No Matter what time of year it is or what city or country I am going to there may be an opportunity to get in the water. I can’t be left unprepared ever.

5. Workout clothes. It is very easy to fall off the wagon traveling and eating steak dinners every night. I try and do some physical activities every where I go to stay healthy. Hiking, basketball, yoga, swimming, whatever it takes

SR: Who has been your favourite artist to tour with and why? Feel free to include a juicy anecdote!

J: I have had a lot of fun touring with different acts along the way. In the hip-hop realm I would have to say it was the times I was tour DJing with Wiz Khalifa. As you can imagine, the shows were massive and there was enough weed around to get about 10,000 people high. In the Electronic world, I would have to say I had the most fun touring with The Bloody Beetroots. SBCR took me on the road early in my career and the great thing about it was how our sounds were so different. I never had to hold back during my sets, knowing that my sound was completely different than his.

SR: How do you find having a residency in Vegas? Is this something you’ve always dreamed of? On a scale of 1-10, do you feel like you’ve reached lvl99 DJ Khaled?

J: Man, I absolutely love my Las Vegas residency at The Light and it’s easily one of my favorite venues to play in the world. From day one, almost every DJ dreams of having a Las Vegas residency, so it’s great to have achieved a goal that I’ve been working towards for years. On a scale of 1-10 I would say that I’m at level 7 of reaching Khaled’s 10 keys to success. But I will never stop pushing till I hit 10!!! TRUST!!!!

SR: What are your plans for SXSW and WMC this year? What do you find to be the biggest difference and/or similarities between the two conferences?

J: SXSW and WMC are both great places to discover new artists and see groundbreaking new sets from a lot of your fav artists at the time. They are such a great environment because virtually all the top artists and up and comers are in the same place rubbing elbows with each other. It creates a very unique environment to network and take in new music. SXSW is more of a place where new artist get to showcase and get exposure. Also, all genres of music are represented there. WMC is virtually all dance music and the majority of parties are based around the more established artists. In my opinion, you should definitley experience both events at some point. But for me, I have been to SXSW and WMC for years. So I chose to skip it this year and head down to beautiful Australia for my debut AUS tour. I think I made the right choice!!!

SR: How do you tackle a remix? What were the process’ like in particular for your remixes of Morgan Page, Martin Solveig and Mac Miller?

J: Each remix I approach differently. Depending on who the remix is for and whether there is a strong vocal element will generally dictate the direction I will go. I like to keep the essence of the original track in tact while adding my touch to it. If there is a big melodic element to a song I am remixing, I love to play off of that and flip the melody as if it were an original I was working on, adding layers and chops, giving it new life. I want my remixes to shine as bright or brighter than the original version.

SR: It’s become very popular for a producer to start their own record label. What is the intention behind Super 7 Records?

J: Well, I launched my label Super 7 Records for a few reasons, but the catalyst behind the launch was simply to have a label to release on at any time. Big record labels don’t hold all the power anymore. If you have marketing ability and somewhat of a budget to get behind the record, you can do anything any other label can do and still keep 100% control. Before I released “Turn Me Up Some” feat REDMAN, for instance, none of the labels had the same vision or passion to push the record as hard as I wanted to. So I said fuck it… I am smart and I have a good team behind me. We can do this shit ourselves. And we did it to great success. Although Super 7 is in its beginning stages, down the line I see the label becoming very influential as my own career progresses.

SR: What’s on your site-see bucket list for Australia? and can we help you achieve this 😉

J: Well thats exactly what I need help with! I love the outdoors so I’m looking forward to exploring a lot and seeing some wild life. Definitely want to hit some beaches as well. I have a handful of days off after my show in Brisbane. Was planning on exploring the Gold Coast a bit. Let me know what I should hit! And if any beautiful Australian girls would like to be my tour guide, I won’t say no. Haha!
