Sydney Wants to Become an Old Person town. Literally.

It is no shock that Sydney nightlife has been rattled and stripped bare over the last few years.

In a recent study conducted by the The City of Sydney Late Night Management Areas Research team it was discovered that their has been a 58% drop in foot traffic in Kings Cross, Oxford Street and the CBD between 2012 and 2015.

News of this unfortunate statistic came via The Sydney Morning Herald, who went on say:

“On average, foot traffic was lower in almost all precincts except Newtown and the southern CBD. The latter has undergone a boom in pedestrian activity in the early evenings: between 7pm and 8pm on a Saturday night, 14,352 people passed along George Street between Bathurst and Liverpool streets, making it busier than Martin Place in peak hour. But these numbers fell back below 2012 levels later in the evening.”

Probably the most interesting (and frustrating) point of the article was towards the end, stating “The City of Sydney has planned to transform its night-time economy by diversifying late-night entertainment options and attracting older visitors. It wants 40 per cent of night-time visitors to be aged 40 or older by 2030, and 40 per cent of businesses open after 6pm to be shops.”

So, with foot traffic already down over 80% in Kings Cross and Oxford St, is the government’s aim to make it a rounded off 100%?

It certainly seems that way, and has caught the attention of Melbourne Premier Daniel Andrews, who took a proverbial stab at Mike Baird and the NSW Government via Twitter today as displayed below:

So what about our nightlife? Will the partygoers continue to be forced further away to party?

Read this essay from Matt Barrie that sums up just how serious, and ridiculous this issue is for our city.
