Canadian trio Keys N Krates have released their stunningly progressive EP, Midnight Mass, on Warner in Australia.
The title track sets the scene slowly, creating an ethereal atmosphere of soft sirens, and subtle kicks. Carefully curated synths progress the short 1 and a half minute track into an arpeggiated breakdown, highlighted with sampled laughter.
The EP continues from the same tone with the next track, Nothing But Space – a soft synth melody, with the beautiful voice of unknown vocalist Aqui carrying it towards an eventually heavy, but ‘feel-good’, trap drop. With a breakup-reminiscent tone within the track, Keys N Krates successfully genre-bend trap, and subsequently take their listeners on a journey throughout the EP.
The final track, Love Again, provides uplifting notes in the EP through a fast paced, head nodding beat, and a smoothly chopped vocal sample. The breakdown takes the pace down a notch, but only for a mere moment, where it isn’t long until the trio pick it right back up again, to drop back into the heavy melody.
Keys N Krates have ultimately raised the ‘trap bar’, with their live style shining through this recent effort.
