Sasha Grey: ‘For now, music is where my heart is.’

After trying her hand at acting, writing, and in her most defining roles as one of the most recognisable porn stars on the planet, Sasha Grey is laying her sights on EDM and djing – and if you’re ready to dismiss her, think again.

Celebrities whose first steps into stardom isn’t in music often cop a bit of flak for dipping their toes in and I knew as I was about to chat with Sasha the kind of reaction she would be getting on the internet from boring bros, chin strokers and purists. It takes one quick look at her resume to see that Sasha completely dominates at whatever she does. Completely owning the porn industry, challenging it’s perceptions of women like no one else,  and she intends to bring that intensity to music. “In a way, I would like to continue that on with music and that’s just as important to me and special to me. Sasha’s keen interest to explore her wide range of interests and talents has always come with a nasty side of criticism, but she knows that “there’s always gong to be people on the left who are very encouraging and very supportive… and then there is always people on the far right who will judge or expect me to stay in the same place.” The harsh reality is that it’s something that doesn’t go away, one look at comments on her Facebook page shows that but rather than letting it get to her she’s “become used to those side of things. Over the years it’s become less and less important to me but knowing that I have a challenge to overcome is also exciting.”

Intelligent, self assured and receptive, Sasha lights up when it comes to talking about her journey in music – from industrial band aTelecine to collaborating, remixing and producing EDM beats. Its funny [because] they’re both based in what is electronic music [but] A few years ago I started getting interest from people in having me dj.” That’s where it all began. Playing in clubs to crowds that weren’t receptive to what she was spinning, Sasha says she “took some time to feel it out and understand my audiences… and when I finally started to get that confidence and understand what [they wanted] it really changed a lot for me and that was sort of a revolution.”

In that time she was learning and understanding what [people] would dance to Sasha discovered EDM and then found many who were interested in collaborating with her, including Jayceeoh who helped her produce her first dance release, ‘Heat of the Night‘. We got to know each other a few months ago at a few different festivals we played at and started talking about music and… we started talking about our evolution and as djs learning the ropes, and that sort of lead to this collaboration.” Recently dropping a remix for Goshfather & Jinco rework of ODB’s ‘Ghetto Superstar‘, Sasha has her sights on continuing on the remix route; actually I started talking to Ariel Pink recently who’s coming out with a new album and I want to remix something of his as well.”

Try and dismiss her all you want but Sasha is doing something she truly loves and enjoys and isn’t that what dance music is all about? I think about what it is that I want in the future and my goals and whether I want to not be in the public eye so much those are all thoughts I have and questions I ask myself all the time but for now music is where my heart is. Right now it’s what I enjoy.”

In fact Sasha is heading to Australia this weekend and is finally popping her Australian club cherry. “It’ll be my first time (clubbing) and I heard Australians are pretty hardcore when it comes to their music (laughs). Australia is so full of life and energy, there’s a really European energy with Australians that I really love and really enjoy.”

What Sasha is bringing down to Australia might just be a new tryst in something she’s passionate in but essentially she is paving the way for chin strokers to become a thing of the past and for music to be fun again. Sasha Grey represents an important change, albeit a small one in the very dark and serious state electronic music is in, while still respecting the punters musical wants and needs. I always kind of reflect on my sets the next day and think about what worked and what didn’t work… I think it’s just about feeling the crowd out and making sure they’re happy and making sure they’re enjoying the music because otherwise I’m not doing my job right.”

If you want to see her do her job right make sure to catch her at the following dates:

Perth – Villa, Friday December 5
Melbourne – Anyway, Saturday December 6
Sydney – Marco Polo (Day Party), Sunday December 7
