INES – Sanctuary

SONY DSC

We discovered Andine and Wahono through friends of friends of friends. Upon listening to their only material so far, we definitely feel that there’s something special in it. Andine’s gorgeous vocal – a result a of formal training she had – fits perfectly with Wahono’s modernistic approach to sound.

The Sanctuary Mixtape isn’t your average mixtape – it’s a collection of their own original production consisting of 7 tracks of which 3 are full length songs – Come Closer, Alone, and Lights. Alone is our personal favorite, but you could may well fell in love with all of them.

We were really curious so in the end we decided to do a full feature, so go enjoy the song and read our short chat to see what’s up.

SR: So how did you guys actually meet?

A: We both went to school in Boston and that’s how we met originally. But we’ve moved to NY in the beginning of the year.

SR: Were you always making music even before you met? Or is this the first time you are actually producing something?

A: Well not technically, but it is the first time I’ve released anything on my own and as myself. In the past  I would help friends out with their stuff, sing in bands and all that.

The work that I put out is special for me because I feel like it really represents who I am and Wahono was a big part in the process.

SR: I think he did a tremendous job in infusing that ‘UK’ vibe, is that something you guys are listening at the moment?

W: We like a lot of different styles and sounds within today’s upcoming sub-genres in electronic music.

We’re both influenced by different genres and styles, it’s not always the same stuff. And we’re always pushing ourselves to incorporate what we hear into our own sound.

It’s not always what people consider as the UK vibe, because that immediately puts everything in a small category.

SR: Can you elaborate more about where you get your inspiration from – was living in Boston and NY a source of inspiration ?

W: Yes definitely, we draw inspiration from different sources, not just music or electronic music in general. In the sanctuary mixtape you can find samples of movie trailers, ambient noise from our apartments, and other elements that we feel is sonically coherent to the theme we have on the mix.

In regards to music, I listen to a lot of old 70s soul and funk records, as well as a lot of Gold Panda and such.  Especially during the time we were making the Sanctuary Mixtape. On the other hand, Andine gets her inspiration from sounds from the 80s new wave era, and a lot of 90s RnB. Vocally in particular, she draws inspiration from RnB female artist in the 90s such as Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, and TLC.

A & W: Mainly, in the making of Sanctuary, we didn’t come up with a definite idea of what its going to be in the first place. There was a lot of brainstorming and discussions about how to piece together a lot of our ideas into one coherent sounds that people will eventually relate to and connect with.

We started working on thins mixtape while we were in Boston and it definitely was a source of inspiration. Boston is so different than NY in the sense that we have different taste in music than some of our friends, – at the time. So we bonded thorough mutual interests in finding the latest sounds and artist. Being in the States in particular allows us to have more resources and attend small gigs to broaden our perspective. We moved to NY in January and that is when we wrapped up Sanctuary.

SR: Cool. Name us any 5 artists that you think we should listen to.

A & W: Darkside, Blood Orange, Sonnymoon, Arca and Airhead!
