Odesza

Having taken Australia by storm with their live shows and touring as part of Perths Circo festival alongside Onra, Bloc Party’s Kele, Nosaj Thing and plenty more we took five with the American electronic duo to talk Australian electronic, fans doing it on-stage (right on!) and the Odesza dance.

They just also happen to make the most luscious and experimental sounding dance music this side of the world and should certainly have a bigger footprint than most, but hey… humble guys, good music, a formula that’ll lead to a timeless nature no doubt.

SR: Hey gents, thanks for taking some time out to chat! First up, excited to head to Australia and Perths Circo party?
O: Very excited! We’ve never really travelled outside the US other then Canada and we are big fans of the music scene, so we’re excited to experience it ourselves.

SR: A guy called Sean Leonard helped the intro between you guys, do you still talk to him? What’s he up to these days? Feel like he should be part of the story haha
O: We’re still very good friends and talk every week. I (Harrison) am actually moving in with him in July. He’s a director and we might have him make a music video for our next album!

SR: Australian dance music seems to be blowing up right now, any reason why? Is it distinctively Australian or just good enough to earn credit worldwide?
O: The Australian music scene has a very distinct and fresh sound that I think a lot of younger kids are really connecting with. I think people are getting over the more dissonant and noise oriented heavy electronic music and want a more melodic sound.

SR: You and your music has a very chilled sentiment but we’re sure some rock star moments have surfaced on-stage or off. Any crazy stories over the years
O: Haha there’s a fairly infamous one. Basically a couple had sex over our stage monitors for about 20 minutes during a show in Montana.

SR: How’s that plan on getting either a dragon or a slow loris as pets working out? Accepted it might be impossible and have to just settle with a cat or dog?
O: We will not settle. Forever chasing the dragon.

SR: Are your mums proud of you or approve of your beats? After all they are usually your toughest critic haha
O: Haha, both of our moms are very sweet ladies and who’ve showed us a lot of support in this music thing.

SR: If there was a Odesza dance move, what would it be like? Instagram pic/video welcome here!
O: The white kid head bob ha
