Beatport To Cheaters; We’re Watching You

Dance and electronic music store Beatport have posted up a lengthy digest on its view of cheaters – those attempting to manipulate top 10 and top 100 charts for “bragging rights” in a move that has been seen as an admirable one.

Instead of allowing the influx of cash behind sales to boost and sales of boosted tracks by way of bots or companies that offer services to push tracks up charts and potentially putting offside its real users that create the backbone of the thriving community, it instead has outlined improvements in their ability to detect those bending the rules in their own favour with offenders looking at removal of tracks, or worst lifetime bans.

“…we monitor our charts daily, looking for anomalies. We’ve built and continue to improve upon technology to prevent chart-boosting efforts. We’re not saying we’ve succeeded or will succeed every time, but we’re getting better at it every day. When we spot a boosted record or track, we remove it from the store, and we’ll continue to do so. Our next step is to permanently ban the offending artists and labels. And we’re not bluffing.”

This is of course to help the real producers of today, those who should earn their deserving spotlight within an often busy and cluttered soundscape

“First, if you’re artificially boosting your sales to fake the demand needed to score a favorable chart position, you’re robbing someone else, someone more deserving, of that same spot. You’re doing more than cheating. You’re stealing. You’re lying. You’re taking false credit for something you didn’t earn, and you’re hurting someone else by doing so.”

We commend Beatport for taking the initiative in what has been a highly discussed topic of those preying on aspiring producers who look to the ‘top charts’ as definitive sources of legitimacy when it comes to buying dance and electronic music.

Ever spotted an iffy track? Give BPTopTracker a whirl. It’s a site that follows the charting of particular tracks and remixes on Beatport both overall and within particular genres and although not sure-fire evidence a good starting point for bringing those responsible to justice.

Good on you Beatport! Read the full post here.
