Basenji

Coming off a heavy amount of hype from his last two singles, Sydney based Basenji is gearing to walk the walk with a busy schedule that has so far included some crazy collaboration (some to be revealed) as well as an appearance on the famous Boiler Room internet live streaming tv channel.

In celebration of his forthcoming appearance on the almost sold out, ‘Not Another Boat Cruise’ that also includes Softwar, Kilter and others, the man behind the breed of dog name caught up with us to answer some Q’s.

Can you describe your last half year rise in the Australian dance music scene?

It has been 5 months since I put my first two tunes online and it has been really crazy ever since. A lot of gigs have been happening and I am spending a lot of time working on heaps of new music. 2014 has been incredible so far and there so many things coming up that I am really looking forward to!

What was it like to perform on the Boiler Room?

I still feel so lucky to have been a part of Boiler Room! I had an amazing night and I was really impressed with the performances of the other artists. It was a bit surreal performing to a camera but I had a lot of fun with it!

Any collaborations in the works?

Lots of collaborations! The most recent is a track I am working on is with the amazing Cosmo’s Midnight and its working title is “Dolce & Gabbana” check out the preview on my instagram:

There are a lot more local artists I am working with, but I think it will be more fun if everyone finds out who they are when the tracks get released!

For people who haven’t seen your set, could you describe it?

When performing a set I try to put together a showcase of new material, whether it is my own demos or unreleased tracks from international artists. There is always room for some older tunes but I try to keep things fresh and a bit different from the kind of stuff you hear everywhere else.

Where do you see the Australian trap sound that you Cosmo’s, Kilter, Wave Racer going in 2014?

I think a lot of people like to group together australian artists, but to me there is no particular unifying ‘aussie’ sound. I look at the Australian scene and see a diverse range of talented individuals rather than a specific “sound” or genre. I feel incredibly lucky to be personally connected with artists like Wave Racer and Cosmo’s Midnight because they will be a big part in the international music scene in 2014 and many years to come.

My biggest musical influence has been… It seems impossible to say just one thing… maybe seeing Chic live

My guilty music pleasure is… I don’t really feel guilty about this, but it is just sort of embarrassing that this has been on rotation in my house a lot

The first ever CD I bought was… I’m not sure about the first CD I ever bought, but the first one I ever received was this single, a long time ago:

The official after party for the ‘Not Another Boat Cruise’ is A1 Bassline (Dirtybird) hosted by Stoney Roads and Charades at Goodgod
