Police look to deny entry to festivals to those caught with illicit drugs

Victoria’s Police Force are pushing for changes in legislation to refuse entry to festivals for punters caught with illicit drugs.

The current laws see the would be party people issued a ‘diversion order’ that requires them to attend an appointment at a later date while still allowing them entry to the festival.

Although police think that getting caught and being given a diversion order that will likely see you in court and paying legal fees isn’t fun enough they want to completely null your day and void you from your festival of choice.

Super Nintendo Intendant O’Neill explains “We want that as a condition of entry,” adding “It should be a condition on their ticket that they will be refused entry if caught with drugs, and we want their tickets withdrawn.”

“It’s a strategy that definitely needs to be in place and we will talk to [event organisers] about it.”

More often than not you’ll see a heavy approach to policing of these events while medical staff are few and far between, a telling tale of ‘discipline’ versus education and safety.

Gone are the days of drug dealers being caught at these festivals and instead individual users with a lower amount of illicit drugs on them, a changing shift in reliance on a handful and instead acceptance of the consequences for personal use.

Are these end users the real problem?

When you take a look at overseas dance and electronic festivals the attendance numbers squash that of local events yet no parallels in serious drug related issues are there.

Why is that?

Festivals will most likely follow suite with the Police but could face serious drops in festival attendees who already pay seemingly high ticket and drink prices.

Update: Stoney Roads fan Cris Bonna Birlanesu suggested Police take it a step further:  “Perhaps we should cut off their hands and stone them to death in the town square too.
