Untold – Black Light Spiral [Hemlock]

Recorded in just a week in his London studio late last year, Untold has finally released his debut album ‘Black Light Spiral’ on his own Hemlock label.

Asked why he’d finally decided to put out a long-player after six years of singles and EPs including a release last year for Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons, he said: “I’ve eaten all the snacks and now it’s time for supper.” Well, this is certainly supper. Since 2008, with releases on his Hemlock imprint, for close chums Hessle Audio and for Clone and R&S among others, he’s been instrumental in the post-dubstep field with clinical appropriations of breakstep, grime, and most recently, European techno. The record is said to continue the artist’s “mission to keep the people up and at it with rough, tough music while confounding them with brilliantly executed improbabilities,” and across 8 tracks and 40 minutes, he eschews any sense of romantic rave nostalgia in favour of focussing on bludgeoning, masculine dread dystopia. Listen to the bone-shattering ‘Drop It On The One’ below, and head over to Surus to cop the album.
