Dancing in Japan could land you in jail!

Yep, that’s right, police in Japan are raiding and shutting down nightclubs for the crime of dancing!

Residents and travellers can blame the ‘Law on Control and Improvement of Amusement Business (fueiho)’ for the lack of boogie in local clubs, or ‘entertainment spaces’ as venue owners are forced to refer to them, thanks to the highly illegal practice of dancing.

To get past these damn pesky government laws a venue must contain at least “66m2 of unobstructed floor space and the club must close by either midnight or 1am,” a bummer if you can’t afford the right place or want to have a light night dance.

The law has said to have greatly affected Osaka’s once thriving nightclub scene, which locals and venue owners are saying is aimed to line government pockets with cash from ridiculous laws and taxes like these.

Just last week, the 500 capacity Roppongi club was raided with three staff members on suspicion of allowing unlicensed dancing (I’d hate to see what a drug offence carries).

Local DJ Takky Ishino isn’t so hopeful about the future of Japan’s dancefloor fun, telling Time Out Japan: “Short of changing the law, I don’t know what we can really do about it, though. If we have demonstrations, it’s not going to change anything. It might just draw the police’s attention and make things even worse.”

It’s not all bad news though. An online petition has been kicked off and currently boasts 155,879 signatures, which we hope helps persuade lawmakers into relaxing things!
