It was labelled the ninth coolest suburb in the world by Timeout magazine and it appears that it’s about to get a little bit cooler.

In September 2020, Marrickville mayor Darcy Byrne and the Inner West Council voted to convert Marrickville Town Hall into a live music and performing arts centre. The move is seen as a huge win for nightlife as NSW enters a new era of revitalisation to the after-dark economy.

This historic building was officially opened 99 years ago in 1922 and sits directly next to the award-winning Marrickville Library. The Mayor quoted on social media that he’d like the future event space to be “a contemporary arts centre that attracts people from across Sydney and Australia”, drawing Chatswood’s Concourse as a practical example.

The council is currently inviting Inner West music venue operators to put a business plan forward before the council for consideration. The finer details like the capacity are yet to be revealed, but could we be seeing large scale concerts from electronic bands playing there by the end of the year, like The Enmore?
