Iconic Sydney pub up for sale

Iconic Sydney pub Hollywood Hotel near Central Station is up for sale with a hefty $10m price tag.

The grungy pub is a relatively low flyer in terms of recent fame with its roots offering a more spectacular history. The legendary watering hole was headed by former owner Doris Goddard, a notable actress and cabaret singer who took to pub ownership like ‘a duck to water’. Over the years she was a known activist and campaigned to repeal the archaic lockout laws that stalled Sydney’s nightlife.

She also owned the Marlborough Hotel, more commonly known as The Marly to locals in Newtown pre snapping up the Hollywood Hotel. She was the owner of the hotel until her recent and tragic passing in 2019.

She purchased the four-story block back in 1977 for $175,000 after returning home post a successful career overseas. It was noted she’d often appear and perform in the bar during her earlier years as the big boss of the watering hole.

In more recent years its lo-fi decor and feel stood out amongst its more contemporary neighbours including Paramount Hotel, Chin Chins, Nomad and Poly – something we hope the new owner retains!

HTL Property’s NSW director Sam Handy, who’s in charge of the sale process said “The Hotel Hollywood is a very rare city fringe hotel exhibiting all the key fundamentals astute purchasers are seeking: late-trading approvals and compelling upside levers within a dynamic precinct”.

In other words, with its 3am liquor licence, 10 poker machines, bar and kitchen as well as nine rooms for accommodation it’ll hopefully stay exactly the way it is!
