Check out Baltra’s utopian remix of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s ‘Hunnybee’

Baltra has been on our radar for a good while now having spent the past four years crafting some of the most infectious house and breaks in the current landscape of dance music. What we weren’t expecting was a remix for Unknown Mortal Orchestra, but as it turns out, it’s pretty otherworldly. Rolling with the new wave of lo-fi house producers, Baltra is no stranger to off-kilter soundscapes and nuanced grooves, but this most recent offering sees the young producer explore a tranquil landscape of distant synths and frictionless vocals, a decent departure for his more club-suited vintage house efforts.

Diving straight in with a shimmering wave of reverb-drenched chords, a weightless hook is blessed with a repetitious vocal line that carries the track into a ensemble of rave breaks and heady sub bass topped with an atmosphere of washed out synth pads. Amongst the the euphoric symphony of trancey chords, a distant chiming of bells and saxophone provide the icing on the cake, bringing an almost Burial-esque sensibility into the mix. As the track approaches it’s climax, we are met with a cathartic crescendo of piano and what sounds like snippets of processed electric guitar.

Having just visited Sydney earlier in the year, Baltra still manages to make time for music despite spending 2018 galavanting across the US and abroad. With such an ambitious remix to add to the catalogue, one can only hope that this means more solid releases in the years to come.
