Nils Frahm surprises us with new 5 track EP

Boasting a career spanning over 20 years, Nils Frahm continues to prove himself as one of the most relevant and polarising modern day composers around, fusing minimalist composition with off kilter electronic soundscapes. Following his latest album All Melody earlier this year, the hard working producer/composer has returned briskly with Encores 1, a collection of tracks that feel as raw as they’re masterfully crafted.

The EP begins with ‘The Roughest Trade’, a delightful series of melancholic melodies that effortlessly flow into one another, bearing a sense of unpredictability that segways into ‘Ringing’, a delicate ensemble of ascending melodies that illustrate feelings of anxiety just as much as tranquillity. The funeral paced ‘To Thomas’ carries a similar feeling, honing in more on the minor key side of Frahm, a feeling that transitions into ‘The Dane’, a beautiful melody that dips in an out of the light and dark. Lastly, we are brought to ‘Harmonium in the Well’, the epic 11 minute finale that sees Nils ditching the piano all together in favour of a harmonium that emits a sombre bed of interweaving chords. As the track reaches it’s crescendo, the track evolves into an epic soundscape of reverberated sound that eventually brings the track to it’s climax.

‘Encore 1’ is out now via Erased Tapes records, check it out below.
