That Time We Pissed Off The Chainsmokers

In the light – or rather dark – of The Chainsmokers debut album ‘Memories… Do Not Open‘, we thought we should go back in time to the year 2014 when a little known track called ‘#SELFIE’ was released and we (Stoney Roads) wound up becoming enemy number one.

Now, a lot of you may recognise The Chainsmokers for their glum, hopelessly romantic hits such as ‘Closer’ and ‘Paris‘, however Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall have a deep history in dance music, and it was ‘#SELFIE’ that put them on the map. Listen to it below.

Hard to do, isn’t it?

So granted you listened through (*pats on the back if you did*), you’d notice that these dudes have definitely changed up the pace in their new stuff a few years on; but at a time where big-room EDM was on the rise and dance music was in a really strange place, we simply couldn’t let ‘#SELFIE’ slide, so we started asking around to see what the general consensus of this song was. We even asked Fatboy Slim during an interview, who described it simply as “someone trying to force a ‘meme’ on us.”

So we gathered our research, and came to a decision…

WE DECLARED ‘#SELFIE’ ONE OF THE WORST SONGS OF 2014

This didn’t sit very well with the dudes, naturally, who in an interview with DJ Mag (that has since been pulled) hit back at us with some classic lines including “their website is full of shit”. Ahhh, when you ruffle feathers…

Thankfully we kept the screenshots. Check it out below:

Now to be fair, they do call us out for not responding to any emails. And they’re right, we never responded. But as the image above depicts; we did try. We really did. Kind of… But not really. Sometimes you’ve got to stick with your guns in certain situations, and The Chainsmokers were one of those situations.

Since then, The Chainsmokers have blocked us on Twitter and have stopped sending us emails. A win for us. But they have also gone on to sign two, million dollar deals, collab with the likes of Halsey and Coldplay and quite obviously make a stack of cash. A hard-earned win for them. We can’t knock the hustle. Clearly their relentless email tactics ended up paying off.

So we like to think of this as an even battle at the end of the day. A draw. Split down the middle. And life moves on. But what we’ve come to realise with a project such as The Chainsmokers is that there really are only two kinds of people in the world; those who are devoted super-fans of The Chainsmokers and those who simply despise them. There doesn’t seem to be any grey area.

We don’t recommend you listen to their album, but if you do then we bid you good luck. To make your life easier, however, we recommend you play the video below and you’ll get the jist of what the entire album is like.
