DJ Tips: How to Properly Test USBs

DJs, we all know the fear of technology not working as it’s meant to when it’s time to jump on the decks, especially when it could have been avoided oh so easily. Sydney’s own A-Tonez is all too familiar with all those issues, and so to help in whatever way he can, has created a series of Facebook tutorials he’s aptly named #TonezTips. This week, ahead of his show at The Met in Brisbane tomorrow night, he’s giving us a rundown on how you can properly prep your USB before a set.

#TonezTips > DJs have you ever had the issue of putting your USB into a CDJ at a gig and have none of your new hectic bangers export correctly? Either an error message appears or the tracks don’t show up at all?

This TonezTip is to show #Pioneer #Rekordbox users a quick way to “TEST” a USB after you have exported to confirm that the playlist/s exported correctly without having gear at home or in your hotel etc.

1 – Once you have exported your playlist or tracks to the USB have a look on the lower left hand side navigation pane in Rekordbox and you will see a drop down arrow titled “Devices”. Click on that.

2 – You will then see a drop down menu for your USB device, one of the options will be “Playlists” click on that and navigate down to your recently added playlists.

3 – Select the recently added playlist/s and try playing a track or multiple tracks from the list, (I like to play a couple from the top, middle and end of the playlist. Repeat this process for every new playlist added. (If your USB has an activity led you will notice it will flash each time you load a track as its actually being accessed from the device instead of your computers internal hard drive.

4 – If the tracks all load and play successfully you can feel confident they will do the same at your gig. If you notice that tracks aren’t loading or you are getting error messages, Delete the playlist and tracks and re-export, if you are constantly having issues I would suggest formatting the USB.

5 – SAFELY EJECT YOUR USB!!!

6 – Always carry backups!!

Hope that helps.

No doubt he’ll be putting these and many more of his tips into action tomorrow night at The Met. He’ll also be playing alongside Philadelphia-based G-Buck, who’s got tracks on OWSLA, Mad Decent and DimMak just to name a few. Tickets are on the door, for a cheap as chips 20 bucks before 12am, and even cheaper if you can get yourself on a guest list. Check the event to get it going here.
