LA’s Amoeba Music To Be Demolished To Make Room For Luxury Tower

Words By Sarah Tonkin

LA’s iconic record store Amoeba Music has been sold and is to be demolished to make room for a luxury residential tower with a rooftop pool.

Sad news for such a renowned, unique musical hub in the city of Angels, which – following the news of Fabric’s closure –  definitely hits a sore spot for music lovers.

However, it has been confirmed in an official statement from Amoeba Music that they ‘voluntarily decided to sell the property to developers’.

As it turns out, Amoeba Music plan on riding out their lease, which is coming up to 15-years in November. In a recent statement, they write “we’re going to remain in our building for the duration of our lease — which is several years — and Amoeba and the building owner are open to us potentially staying longer,”

The statement came as a much needed explanation after architectural illustration firm, Shimahara, shared the below design at the same address of Ameoba Music. As you can imagine, serious concerns ensued.

According to Time Out LA, the Amoeba Music building was sold for $34 million in October, 2015.

Thankfully, as explained in their statement, Amoeba Music have no plans of leaving Hollywood, but unfortunately the iconic building will be facing a wrecking ball sooner than later.
