Berghain Is Facing A Development Threat

The renowned Berlin nightspot Berghain is facing the danger of developers encroaching on the venue.

A new ‘family entertainment district’ is set to be built next to the Mercedez Benz Arena, a disused area that neighbours Berghain. The development will include a “Music Hall”, mall, bowling alley, cinema, restaurants and other family-orientated businesses.

The development was officially started on June 6 of this year, and is expected to be finished by June 2018.

Though it is not confirmed if Berghain will need to closing or moving, the situation does reflect that of what happened to OstGut (Berghain’s predecessor) in 2004 when they were forced to move venues due to the development of the Mercedes Benz Arena.

With the instalment of this new family-friendly district, it is likely Berghain will suffer from noise, drugs and alcohol complaints from the public; something that Berghain avoid due to their isolation.

Here’s hoping they don’t shut down.
