Hot Dub Time Machine shares Top 5 party anthems!

Arguably one of the greatest parties getting around, Hot Dub Time Machine – the brain child of Tom Lowndes – is currently amidst a huge national tour, taking his timeless tune selections to all major Aussie cities.

With the tour’s halfway point around the corner, we caught up with the man behind Hot Dub to pick his brain and find out what his top 5 party tracks are, and why. Take note guys!

1: Shirley Ellis – The Clapping Song (1965)

So funky, so good. I have no idea how to play whatever game the singer is describing, but it’s so hiphop and awesome, a truly timeless party classic.

2: Stevie Wright – Evie (1974)

I’ve been playing Evie since Stevie passed away last year, and it always goes off, far more than you might think. If you’re not across Stevie, he was (imho) the first proper Aussie Rock Star. Normie Rowe often gets that title but from what I can tell he mainly covered Beatles songs, while Stevie was a hard living, brilliant, totally original artist who wrote belting, heavy, proper rock songs.

3: Chaka Khan – Ain’t Nobody (1983)

This is my current favourite 80’s song, narrowly beating ‘All Night Long,’ by Lionel Ritchie. Like all great 80’s songs, it still sounds kind of futuristic, but still has the raw soul power of Chaka Khan. A song that only 20% of people might recognize at the start, but when the chorus hits, everyone gets into…

4: Delerium – Silence (DJ Tiësto’s In Search Of Sunrise Remix) (1999)

Possibly my favourite piece of electronic dance music, (other contender: Insomnia by Faithless) It’s so epic and beautiful that it manages to capture everything that is great about trance, prog and even a bit of techno. Reach for the lasers, safe as f***….

5: Kanye West – Get Em High (2004)

People who hate on Kanye have forgotten how great Kanye is or at least how good he was. College Dropout is such a great album, and this song still goes off anywhere, anytime. (except at a rugby league fundraiser with heaps of families that I played it once in 2005. Turns out there’s quite a bit of swearing that you only notice when surrounded by children.)

WE LIED, THERE IS 6!

6:  Maya Jane Coles – Spectrum (Maya Janes Coles Remix)

I love Florence. ‘Sweet Nothing,’ is so great, but Spectrum, particularly this remix is really great too. The Calvin Harris remix is a bit too cheesy, and the original a bit to Indie, but Maya Janes Coles remix is beautiful, techy and amazing….

Catch Hot Dub Time Machine on Saturday at The Met in Brisbane if you know whats good for you!
