McDonald’s Makes Fully Functional Midi-Controller Placemats

Ever been tucking into a Big Mac and thought to yourself “man, I’d love to make a beat right about now”?

Of course you have, it’d be strange if you hadn’t. Well, if Leicester City can win the EPL, then you can DEFINITELY make music at Macca’s, and that time hath come.

TheNetherlands brand of McDonald’s have jumped onto the rising popularity of electronic music like a dung beetle to a turd, creating a fully functional, paper thin midi-controller placemat. Sound crazy? It ain’t!

The midi is made with conductive ink on a thin as f**k circuit board (or placemat) with 26 digital touchpoints. It acts as a tiny little interactive studio, complete with a keyboard, effects touchpad and audio recording. All you need is a smartphone!

The brains behind the project are digital designer Jan Jesse Bakker and TBWA creative technologist Radha Pleijsant, who say “The paper of the placemat is what makes this technique so innovative… The phone merely acts as the speaker and screen, which is easily connected to the placemat via Bluetooth, making the sure you can hear the music on your speakers.”

Can someone bring this to Australia please? Peep the video below to see how it works.
