My 5: Elizabeth Rose Shares her Top 5 Pieces of Studio Equipment

Elizabeth Rose – for those who may not know – is a production wiz.

The singer/songwriter oozes with creativity and this translates not only through her lyricism and vocal range but and ear in the production side of the scale as well.

The Sydney based artist is just about to release her debut album titled Intra, as well as kick off a nationwide tour, but despite all her busy schedule, we managed to grab some time with her to pick her brain on the topic of studio equipment.

Amateur producers, take note!

1: Audio Technica M50X Head Phones

I’m very lucky to be sponsored by Audio Technica because their gear is unreal! I use these headphones when I DJ and when I’m in studio to check the mix / record my vocals. Really well balanced sound / frequencies with just enough clarity and bass.

2: Prophet 08

This is my big baby. I wrote a lot of my album and previous EP on this beast and I play live with it too when I tour. It has so many great presets – even James Blake uses it, the famous preset that he uses in Retrograde that pitch bends into that lush chord.

3: Arturia Microbrute

I got this one as a gift a few years back and my god it’s so powerful…I used it for a lot of bass sounds on my album – especially on “One Shot”. The great thing about it too is that it is teeny tiny! About 30cm in length, this lil guy is my fav analog synth so far… highly recommend to check it out.

4: Pocket Piano

This is another little pocket rocket that I used a lot of on my album. I actually came across this when I was in the studio with Gotye back in 2013 and he showed me this instrument…I was immediately hooked. It’s made by Critter & Guitari who also do a few other cool little synths, but the pocket piano is my favourite so far. The look of it too is what makes it cool just as much as the bizarre sounds that come out of it! Only downside is that you can’t save presets, it’s a new day every time you flick that on & off switch.

5: Audio Technica AT2020USB

I’ve used quite a few portable demo mics in my time, but this one is real damn easy to use and super effective. I record all of my voice-over radio press stuff & it has great sound quality & clarity. You can plug it into your computer via USB and away you go! Presto!
