Whirr dropped by label over transphobic tweets

Following a series of transphobic tweets, Whirr have been dumped by independent labels Run for Cover Records and Graveface Records. Whirr took aim at Washington trans-feminist punk band G.L.O.S.S, comparing the band to the Silence of the Lambs character Buffalo Bill, and stating the G.L.O.S.S  were “just a bunch of boys running around in panties making shitty music.” Run for Cover responded with:

Whirr’s Nick Basset, who deleted the tweets, stated the morning after that the disgusting tweets were posted by “a friend” while also stating, “the comments made last night do not reflect any members personal views.”

Shortly after the above statement, Graveface Records whom had previously released Whirr’s music, severed all ties with the band stating, “Simply enough I will not be releasing records by anyone I know to be hateful, especially in regards to all of this.”

Run the Cover quickly shut down the idea that Whirr’s apology had changed the circumstances of the situation. Statement via Pitchfork.

Frankly, no, it doesn’t change anything. We were aware of the information in Whirr’s statement when we made the decision. Although the band is not signed to our label, and never have been, we have decided to not work with them in the future, and stop selling their releases we did have a hand in. Also, despite being at a financial net loss with Whirr and Camera Shy, we will be donating $3,000 to a TBA non profit in support of equal rights for LGBTQ.
We will be posting what organisation later today, we just didn’t want to jump the gun on that decision.
