Why Exactly Have Instagram Banned The #EDM Hashtag?

We’ve all been thinking that ‘EDM’ was going to eat itself sooner or later with a big for the argument falling into place with global image/video sharing platform Instagram recently banning the #EDM hashtag.

Turns out the rather simple hashtag has entered raunchy territory with it “consistently being used to share images and videos that violate community guidelines” according to a statement by an Instagram spokesperson and not the speculation that it was in response to the death at HARD over the weekend.

What does it all mean?

Somehow there’s a higher volume of nudity ie boobs and what not being hashtaged with #EDM, enough so that Instagram says it’s gone too far and blocked it from being searched – think #thinspo, #curvy etc

In short, you can’t search the #EDM hashtag to find your PLUR buddies anymore.

Who to blame?

At this point it’s really just the community that have somehow hijacked a fairly generic term and re-defined it as wearing very little to your club or festival scene (ahem – rave booty).

This isn’t the end of the hashtag according to Instagram if the community decide butts, boobs and pasties are not what ‘EDM’ should be visualised as, they too said they’ll educate users on the policies so no one ends up getting anything else blocked.

Maybe we should be asking ourselves, what has #EDM become?
