Another One Bites The Dust… Lockout’s Strike Again

The Sydney lockout laws have struck again as iconic Kings-Cross venue Soho confirmed today they’ve closed their doors.

Having served the sweaty needs of Sydney’s dance floor family Soho first opened 20 years ago, operating as Yu for eight years before relaunching under it’s original name in 2009.

Consistently delivering a host of club nights with the likes of The Usual Suspects, The Sydney Social and Electric Disco having called the Victoria St venue home and internationals like Tchami, Bixel Boys, AC Slater and Rudimental having dropped through the venue will be sorely missed.

Soho owner Andrew Lazarus blames the mundane laws warning of more possible closures,

“The lockout laws have destroyed an entertainment precinct making us the latest victim. These laws have seen patronage to the Kings Cross area decline significantly and when combined with the increased cost of compliance, it has made the business of providing entertainment no longer viable.”

Following on from the closure of The Backroom, The Flinders Hotel and Q-Bar as well as the relocation of Spice Cellar outside of the lock out zone, the demise of Kings Cross now seems inevitable.

Is it time for the government to reassess these laws and follow the lead of cities like Melbourne who are cutting back their lock-out restrictions ?
